Pela paz e liberdade: Pompeo e Netanyahu não são bem-vindos a Portugal

Tem lugar hoje um encontro em Lisboa entre o secretário de Estado dos EUA, Mike Pompeo, e o primeiro-ministro cessante de Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu. O LIVRE opõe-se a esta visita e à receção de ambos por parte do primeiro-ministro António Costa e do ministro dos Negócios Estrangeiros, Augusto Santos Silva.

Netanyahu, atualmente a enfrentar um processo por corrupção, distinguiu-se enquanto primeiro-ministro israelita pela sua posição autoritária e agressiva perante os que dele discordavam, bem como pelo alargar da construção de colonatos em território palestino ocupado. Este encontro tem também como objetivo a apresentação de Netanyahu dos seus projetos de anexação formal do Vale do Jordão.

Por seu lado, a administração Trump, representada por Pompeo, não só tem apoiado Netanyahu, como tem agido ao arrepio da lei internacional. Do reconhecimento de Jerusalém como capital de Israel até à recente declaração por parte do próprio Pompeo de que os Estados Unidos deixarão de considerar a construção de colonatos como inconsistentes com a lei internacional, são vários os exemplos de como esta administração tem contribuído para o aprofundar da dominação do povo palestino.

Por tudo isto, o LIVRE considera que Pompeo e Netanyahu não são bem-vindos a Portugal e reitera a sua posição na defesa dos direitos humanos e da autodeterminação dos povos, condenando a ocupação israelita dos territórios palestinianos e reafirmando a necessidade de reconhecimento do Estado da Palestina pelo Governo português.

The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, and the Israeli prime-minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, are meeting today in Lisbon. LIVRE is against this visit and against both of these being received by the Portuguese Prime-Minister António Costa and Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva.

Netanyahu, who currently faces corruption charges, distinguished himself as Israeli PM for his aggressive and authoritarian behaviors against critics, as well as for his plans to expand Jewish settlements on occupied Palestinian territory. This meeting also has the aim for Netanyahu to publicly present his projects of annexation of the Jordan River Valley.

The Trump administration, here represented by Pompeo, has not only been a supporter of Netanyahu, but has also acted in defiance of International Law. From the recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel to the recent declaration by Pompeo himself that the US will stop considering the expansion of settlements as a violation of International Law, there are numerous examples of how the current US administration has contributed to increase the oppression of the Palestinian people.

For all these reasons, LIVRE party believes that Pompeo e Netanyahu are not welcome in Portugal and reasserts its position in the defense of human rights and self-determination of peoples, condemning the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories and reaffirming the need for the Portuguese government to recognize the State of Palestine.
