Nos últimos dois meses a Bulgária tem sido palco de manifestações anticorrupção, contra o Procurador-Geral e o Governo, acusados de pactuar com a máfia búlgara, cujas origens remontam aos serviços de espionagem do antigo regime comunista e que tem ligações ao sistema judicial, aos media e ao partido no governo, sendo o primeiro-ministro acusado de facilitar a atuação mafiosa.
O primeiro-ministro búlgaro Boyko Borissov (Gerb, afiliado no Partido Popular Europeu – PPE) é um aliado próximo da chanceler alemã Angela Merkel e da Presidente da Comissão Europeia Ursula von der Leyen, o que, segundo os protestantes búlgaros, justificará a complacência com que o país tem sido tratado no que diz respeito ao escrutínio do Estado de Direito.
A resposta do governo aos protestos tem sido pautada por abusos, violência policial, e detenções ilegais de manifestantes.
Ontem, 2 de setembro, tiveram palco na capital búlgara, Sofia, novos protestos tendo a polícia detido Borislav Sandov, copresidente do partido Zelenite (Partido Verde Búlgaro, afiliado com o Partido Verde Europeu) bem como três outros membros do partido, que participavam numa manifestação pacífica em frente ao parlamento búlgaro.
O LIVRE exige a libertação imediata de Borslav Sandov e todos os manifestantes ilegalmente detidos e apela ao Governo Português para que intervenha, no quadro das instituições europeias. Apelamos também à Comissão Europeia e ao Parlamento Europeu para que intervenham exigindo a libertação imediata dos manifestantes e procedendo a uma análise da situação do cumprimento dos critérios de Copenhaga pelo Estado-Membro da Bulgária, nomeadamente pelo respeito pelo Estado de Direito.

Anticorruption protests in Bulgaria: LIVRE calls for the release of the imprisoned protesters
During the last two months, Bulgaria has been the stage of anti-corruption protests against the Attorney General and the Government, accused of colluding with the Bulgarian Mafia, whose origins are associated with espionage services of the former communist regime and has connections to the justice system, the media and the ruling party, being the Prime Minister accused of facilitating the mafia’s action.
The Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov (GERB, affiliated with the European People’s Party – EPP) is a close ally of the German Chanceler Angela Merkel and the President of the European Comission Ursula von der Leyen, which, according to some Bulgarian protesters, justifies the leniency with which the country has been treated concerning the scrutiny of the rule of law.
The government’s answer to the protesters has been marked by abuse, police brutality and illegal detentions of protesters.
Yesterday, September 2nd, new protests took place in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia, and the police arrested Borislav Sandov, co-chair of the Zelenite party (Green Party of Bulgaria, affiliated with the European Green Party) as well as other three members of the party, who participated in a peaceful protest in front of the Bulgarian parliament.
LIVRE demands the immediate release of Borslav Sandov and all the protesters who were illegally detained and urges the Portuguese Government to intervene, within the European institutions. We urge the European Commission and the European Parliament to intervene demanding the immediate release of the protesters and scrutinising compliance with the Copenhagen criteria by the Member State of Bulgaria, specifically regarding the rule of law.
